In response to a series of violent incidents in Fells Point, Baltimore Police heightened their presence over a bustling weekend marked by the Sail250 Maryland festivities. Residents and business owners noted a significant improvement in safety during this popular event.
With thousands flocking to the waterfront, police officers were deployed throughout the area, both on foot and in patrol vehicles. This enhanced security followed recent troubling events, including a shooting and the arrest of a teenager, prompting city officials to assure the community of increased law enforcement during major public gatherings.
Ron Furman, owner of Max's Taphouse, remarked on the difference the additional security made, stating, "This weekend was a little different because we had extra security and extra police and we had fencing around the whole area." He expressed relief that the weekend proceeded without any major incidents.
The calmer environment was a welcome change for many, particularly for those who had been concerned about fights and public drinking that had previously marred the area. Local artist To Da Lute shared his disappointment over the fear that had kept visitors away, emphasizing the need for a vibrant atmosphere at the harbor.
In a bid to further enhance safety, city officials recently introduced a new safety plan, which includes a curfew requiring children under 14 to be accompanied by an adult after 9 p.m., and teens aged 14 to 17 to have adult supervision after 11 p.m. Additionally, officers conducted ID checks throughout the neighborhood.
The future of this heightened police presence remains uncertain, as inquiries have been made regarding the continuation of these measures throughout the summer, especially with more large events such as America250 on the horizon. As of now, the Baltimore Police Department has not provided a response regarding ongoing enforcement strategies.
