Independent Autopsy of Nolan Wells Fails to Determine Cause of Death

An independent autopsy conducted on Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, has not provided clarity on the cause or manner of his death, according to civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents Wells' family.

The preliminary findings were shared during a press conference at the NAACP National Convention in Chicago, led by Dr. Roger Mitchell, a forensic pathologist and former Chief Medical Examiner in Washington.

Crump indicated that since the autopsy results are inconclusive, the possibility of foul play remains open. Notably, upon receiving Wells' body on July 10, the throat was not included, which is critical for a comprehensive analysis. The Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office typically withholds certain organs for further examination.

The preliminary findings also highlighted significant discoloration in the tissue at the back of Wells' head, which could be pertinent to understanding the circumstances surrounding his death.

Wells' body was discovered floating off an island's coast two days after he had gone on a July 4 boat trip with friends. Crump has pledged to investigate the events leading to Wells' disappearance, as his friends did not report him missing until two days later.

This second autopsy, funded by former NFL player Colin Kaepernick, aims to determine if there were any injuries beyond drowning. The local community and Black leaders have called for transparency in the investigation, as Wells was Black and traveled with a group of white friends.

A reward of $125,000 has been established for information that leads to an arrest and conviction related to Wells' death, with contributions from public figures like Rev. Al Sharpton and actor Tyler Perry.

Wells was laid to rest just two days prior to the autopsy announcement, where Sharpton expressed concerns over the inconsistencies and unanswered questions surrounding the case. He criticized the early statements from local law enforcement that suggested no foul play was suspected.

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter stated that initial interviews indicated Wells may have chosen to remain on the island, with his friends believing he would arrange for a ride home. The investigation is ongoing, and the friends are reportedly cooperating with authorities.

Crump expressed frustration over the slow pace of the investigation, emphasizing the need for timely answers for the grieving family.
