Investigation Underway After 1-Year-Old Found Dead in Baltimore Car

Baltimore Police are investigating the death of a 1-year-old boy who was found unresponsive in a parked vehicle on Thursday afternoon in Northwest Baltimore.

Authorities responded to a call at approximately 1:40 p.m. in the 6200 block of Greenspring Avenue, where a parent had discovered the child unconscious inside a Honda van, according to police spokesperson Niki Fennoy.

Emergency medical personnel attempted to revive the boy, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the child’s death are being treated as “questionable,” Fennoy noted.

While it has been confirmed that the child was left in the vehicle, details regarding the duration of time he spent inside have not been disclosed. The boy’s body has been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Stephanie Moore, a representative for the Chief Medical Examiner's Office, indicated that the investigation is still ongoing.

Although officials have not directly linked the boy’s death to the extreme heat conditions, Baltimore was under a Code Red heat alert on the day of the incident. In May of the previous year, a similar tragedy occurred when a 2-year-old girl died after being left in a parked car for several hours in the Wheaton-Glenmont area.

According to the Maryland Department of Health, there have been 19 heat-related fatalities in the state this year, with eight occurring during a heat wave in early July.

Experts warn that even moderately warm temperatures can pose serious risks to children left unattended in vehicles. Reports indicate that over three dozen children have died from heat-related incidents in cars in 2024 alone.
