Investigation Underway After 1-Year-Old Found Dead in Car in Baltimore

Baltimore Police are conducting an investigation following the tragic death of a one-year-old boy found in a car on Thursday in Northwest Baltimore.

Authorities responded to a call at approximately 1:40 p.m. regarding a child who was discovered unresponsive in a Honda van parked in the 6200 block of Greenspring Avenue. Despite the immediate efforts of emergency medical personnel, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Niki Fennoy, a spokesperson for the Baltimore Police Department, the circumstances surrounding the child’s death are being treated as 'questionable.' The police have not disclosed how long the boy had been left in the vehicle.

The child’s body has been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Stephanie Moore, a representative for the office, confirmed that the investigation into the case is ongoing.

While officials have not established a direct connection between the boy’s death and the extreme heat conditions in the area, it is noteworthy that Baltimore was under a Code Red extreme heat alert on the day of the incident. This summer has seen a concerning number of heat-related fatalities in Maryland, with 19 deaths reported so far, including several during a heat wave in early July.

Experts warn that even moderate temperatures can pose serious risks to children left in vehicles. In 2024 alone, over three dozen children have died from heat-related incidents in parked cars, according to reports from the Associated Press.
