Investigation Underway into Cecil County Boat Explosion Injuring Nine

Authorities are investigating a boat explosion that occurred on July 4th at Schaefer's Canal House and Marina in Cecil County, Maryland, which resulted in nine people being hospitalized.

The incident took place shortly after 4 p.m. when a 32-foot Wellcraft cruiser, built in 1988, was docked and had just completed refueling. Emergency services responded to the scene and evaluated ten individuals, with nine suffering injuries.

Among the injured, four individuals were transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center due to serious burns. The victims included a 16-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man, both from Elkton, as well as two 31-year-olds from Newark, Delaware.

Five additional victims received treatment at nearby medical facilities, while one person was assessed at the scene and did not require further medical attention. Two dock employees, aged 18 and 20, were also taken to the hospital due to concerns over smoke inhalation.

Investigators from the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal are looking into the possibility that the explosion may have been caused by a failure to activate the fuel vapor blower fan or to allow adequate ventilation after refueling. The scene was cleared by deputy state fire marshals shortly before 9 p.m. on the same day, and it was noted that the boat did not sustain any fire damage.

The investigation into the exact cause of the explosion is ongoing.
