Investigators Seek Video Evidence of Fatal Police Shooting in Gaithersburg

The Maryland Office of the Attorney General is actively searching for video footage regarding a police shooting that occurred on Sunday evening in Gaithersburg. The incident involved officers from both Montgomery County and Gaithersburg police who fired at a man allegedly seen loading a firearm at a bus stop.

The shooting took place around 6:50 p.m. near Montgomery Village Plaza. According to authorities, officers attempted to deescalate the situation while managing a crowded parking lot in the area.

During their interaction with the man, actions taken by him prompted the officers to discharge their weapons. Fortunately, no officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.

Montgomery County Police reported that multiple officers from their department, along with those from Gaithersburg, were involved in discharging their firearms. The man, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was pronounced dead at the scene, and a handgun was recovered.

This incident marks the second police shooting near Montgomery Village Plaza this year; a previous shooting in March involved officers wounding a Germantown man who had allegedly fired at them during a chase.

The Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division is overseeing the case, as is mandated by state law for fatal police shootings. The release of preliminary information about the incident is currently delayed as investigators require more time to review the details.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the shooting, including cellphone or private video footage, to reach out to the Independent Investigations Division at 410-576-7070 or via email at [email protected].
