Ivan Bates Joins Race for Baltimore City State's Attorney

Ivan J. Bates officially declared his candidacy for the Democratic primary for Baltimore City State’s Attorney during an interview on Midday. His announcement comes as the 2022 election season heats up.

Last week, Thiru Vignarajah also entered the race, adding to the competition. The current State's Attorney, Marilyn Mosby, is expected to run for a third term, although she has yet to confirm her intentions or file the necessary paperwork. Additionally, Roya Hannah has announced her plans to run as an independent in the upcoming general election.

Bates previously ran for State’s Attorney in 2018, finishing second to Mosby and ahead of Vignarajah. He has a strong legal background, having served as an assistant state’s attorney in Baltimore after earning his law degree from William and Mary in 1995. His experience includes work in the Juvenile Crime Division and the Homicide Division.

In 2006, Bates founded his own law firm, Bates & Garcia, P.C., where he has since established a successful practice as a defense attorney. His career began after he served in the United States Army and earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from Howard University in 1992.

At 53 years old, Bates resides in Locust Point and is a divorced father to a young daughter.

For those interested in engaging with Bates, comments and questions can be directed to Midday via phone, email, or Twitter.
