Johnson and Trump Discuss Housing Bill Amid Legislative Stalemate

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) held a meeting at the White House on Thursday with President Donald Trump, aiming to resolve the ongoing legislative deadlock surrounding the SAVE America Act and a recently approved bipartisan housing bill.

Johnson described the discussions as "very productive," stating that he and Trump were aligned in their objectives.

This meeting follows Trump's unexpected decision on Wednesday to cancel the signing of a bipartisan housing bill aimed at enhancing homeownership affordability. The President expressed a desire for Congress to prioritize the passage of the SAVE America Act first, a measure that proposes new voting eligibility restrictions and identification requirements, which has encountered pushback in the Senate.

The legislative process in the House has effectively stalled, as some Republican members indicated they would not engage in further discussions until the SAVE America Act was addressed.

In a message directed at House Republicans on Thursday, Trump called for unity among party members, stating, "No more grandstanding."

Following the meeting, Johnson indicated that the House would proceed to send the pending housing bill to Trump, who will have ten days to either sign it into law or veto it.
