Karla Silvestre has announced her victory in the Democratic primary for the at-large seat on the Montgomery County Council. Silvestre triumphed over 13 other candidates, including immigration lawyer Fatmata Barrie, by a margin of less than one percentage point.
In a county that heavily favors Democratic candidates, winning the primary is often seen as a pathway to success in the general election, which will take place in November. One Republican candidate, Sherwin Wells, will also appear on the ballot.
Silvestre, who previously served on the Board of Education and has been the director of community engagement at Montgomery College since 2014, expressed her commitment to improving the community. In her campaign, she emphasized the need for affordable housing, strong public schools, support for immigrants, and the well-being of small businesses.
Her victory comes as County Executive Marc Elrich and incumbent council members Laurie-Anne Sayles and Scott Goldberg have already established significant leads in their respective races for at-large seats.
Silvestre's personal journey began when she immigrated from Guatemala at the age of eight, after her father faced persecution for organizing with Indigenous farmers. She aims to ensure that Montgomery County remains a welcoming and supportive place for all residents.
