Residents using Kobalt yard tools are advised to check their batteries before engaging in yard work this weekend. A recall has been issued for more than 500,000 units, including trimmers, blowers, mowers, and chainsaws, due to a potential fire hazard.
The issue arises from the lithium-ion batteries that can short-circuit when charged through the tools' USB-C port while still inserted in the equipment. This malfunction has led to 34 reported incidents of batteries smoking, sparking, or catching fire, although no injuries have been reported.
Consumers are urged to stop charging these batteries immediately and to reach out to the manufacturer for a free replacement. The recall specifically affects tools equipped with 24-volt lithium-ion batteries.
For ongoing updates regarding product recalls, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) posts notices weekly on its website. Individuals can also subscribe to receive email alerts about product recalls directly from the CPSC.
