Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company Launches First Junior Fire Camp for Young Responders

LAKE SHORE, Md. — The Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company has kicked off its inaugural week-long junior fire camp, aimed at teaching essential emergency response skills to 25 young participants.

During the camp, attendees are being educated on various topics including firefighting techniques, paramedic operations, and the functioning of a 911 command center. The curriculum also covers department organization, leadership, fire behavior, fire prevention, CPR, and first aid.

Assistant Chief Joseph Larson emphasized the dual purpose of the camp. "It would be a great idea, multipurpose to get them exposed to the fire service and see what it's like, but also to see if they'd be interested in our juniors program," he stated.

This initiative not only aims to educate the youth but also serves as a recruitment tool for the department's junior firefighter program, with the hope of nurturing future volunteers. Larson noted that while some campers are enthusiastic about joining the fire department, others are more hesitant, having been encouraged to attend by their parents.

Camper Tresamae Muncy shared her thoughts on the experience, stating, "It is a lot of fun. It helps. You learn a lot, and it also kind of teaches you to be strong and to work as a team."

Another camper, Nolan Scott, who is already a member of the junior firefighter program, described the camp as a valuable introduction to the responsibilities they undertake. He urged others to participate, saying, "I highly encourage to join because you could learn basic first aid stuff firefighting, which is good for not just being a career firefighter, but also just outside of it. If you see somebody having an emergency, you can help them."

The camp will conclude this Saturday with a graduation ceremony for the campers and their families, scheduled for 11 a.m. at the new Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Station.
