Large Sinkhole Opens in East Baltimore Following Water Main Break

A large sinkhole appeared in East Baltimore early Saturday morning, resulting from the break of a 12-inch water main. The incident occurred at approximately 12:21 a.m. at the intersection of North Chester Street and Ashland Avenue.

According to the Baltimore Police Department, a car was found partially submerged in the sinkhole. Fortunately, the 50-year-old female driver managed to escape without any reported injuries.

The sinkhole extended across the entire roadway in the Middle East neighborhood, leading to immediate action from city officials. Crews from the Baltimore Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Works were deployed to the scene to address the water main issue and begin repairs.

Authorities are advising motorists to steer clear of the area, anticipate traffic disruptions, and adhere to posted detours as work continues.

This incident mirrors a similar occurrence from the previous year, when another vehicle was trapped in a sinkhole on Brehms Lane in the Belair-Edison neighborhood. In that case as well, no injuries were reported.
