Lawsuit Filed Against Frederick County Schools Over Allegations of Antisemitism

Leslie Williamson, a former teacher at New Market Middle School, has filed a federal lawsuit against the Frederick County Board of Education, citing pervasive antisemitism and a hostile work environment as reasons for her early retirement after 23 years in the school system.

Williamson’s lawsuit, submitted on July 8, claims that the school district failed to address rampant antisemitism, leaving her no choice but to leave her position. The suit seeks compensation that includes back pay, front pay, benefits, and damages.

Gregg C. Greenberg, the attorney representing Williamson, indicated that the legal proceedings could extend over several years due to the busy nature of the federal court system. Following the filing of the lawsuit, the school board has 21 days to respond, which could involve either addressing the allegations or seeking to dismiss the case.

The discovery phase, which often takes substantial time, may last around six months or more. Greenberg noted that after this phase, the district might file a motion for summary judgment, which could take additional time for a ruling.

Williamson previously spoke about her experiences with antisemitism, including incidents where students displayed symbols of hate, such as swastikas. Despite her efforts to address these issues with school administration, she reported feeling unsupported and dismissed.

In June, FCPS Communications Manager Brandon Oland stated that Williamson's previous complaints to federal agencies had not resulted in findings against the school system. He emphasized the district's commitment to fostering a respectful and inclusive environment.

The lawsuit details several incidents of antisemitism at New Market Middle School, including drawings of hate symbols on school property. Williamson's complaint alleges that school officials were aware of these incidents but failed to take appropriate action.

As Williamson prepares for the next phase of this legal battle, her attorney remarked on the challenges ahead, emphasizing the emotional toll of the process.
