A tragic incident in Florida on Tuesday resulted in the death of a 28-year-old man who was struck by a semi-trailer truck while attempting to evade U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
The man was part of a group of four individuals who fled from a vehicle during an encounter with ICE agents in the parking lot of a gas station located near State Road 16. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, while attempting to cross the busy road, the man ran into the path of the oncoming truck and was fatally injured.
Florida Highway Patrol officials confirmed that they were not involved in the initial encounter but have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man's death. In a statement, they noted that the pedestrian was struck in the right lane of the highway.
Details regarding the victim's identity, including his name, nationality, and immigration status, have not yet been disclosed. As of now, neither ICE nor the Department of Homeland Security has issued a statement regarding the incident.
This incident comes at a time when ICE is facing heightened scrutiny following several fatal encounters in recent days. Notably, a 26-year-old Colombian man was shot by ICE agents during a traffic stop in Maine, and another individual was killed in a similar incident in Houston.
The ongoing investigations into these events raise important questions about ICE's operational practices and their implications for community safety.
