A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to six years in prison following a probation violation related to a fatal car crash on I-695 in Maryland. Melachi Brown was found to have violated the terms of his probation by driving on a suspended license, as confirmed by the Baltimore County State's Attorney's Office.
Brown's initial sentence was 18 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to six counts of felony manslaughter in connection with the 2023 incident, where he was found to be speeding. The judge expressed serious concerns about Brown's potential danger to public safety, leading to the extended sentence.
In addition to his prison time, Brown has been ordered to serve three years of probation. Following his release in June 2024, he was placed under home detention and prohibited from operating any vehicle until the conclusion of his probation.
However, in March, Brown was apprehended for a probation violation after being pulled over due to non-working taillights. During the traffic stop, he admitted to driving for friends leaving a hospital.
Another individual involved in the crash, Lisa Lea, was sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to six counts of vehicular manslaughter, stemming from her collision with Brown's vehicle that resulted in both cars crashing into a work zone.
Concerns regarding Brown's driving privileges were previously voiced by victims' family members. Jim DiMaggio, brother of one of the deceased victims, expressed outrage over Brown's ability to drive, despite assurances from the state's attorney that his license would be permanently revoked.
