The Maryland Department of Transportation's Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has received unanimous approval from the Board of Public Works to commence a significant expansion project at the Martin Maintenance Yard in Baltimore County. This initiative is part of the broader MARC Growth and Transformation Plan, aimed at improving service frequency and better accommodating evolving travel demands.
The expansion will involve enhancing the storage capacity for MARC trains, as well as the installation of new tracks that include catenary electrification. Additional features will consist of crossover tracks, a new inspection pit, and updated maintenance equipment such as hydrants and air piping extensions.
Maryland Transit Administrator Holly Arnold emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, "Investing in our rail infrastructure today ensures we can deliver improved service in the future." The enhancements are designed to transition MARC Train operations from a commuter service to a more extensive regional rail service.
Notably, the project will also support the MTA's commitment to operate electrified trainsets on the Penn Line, particularly following the completion of Amtrak’s Frederick Douglass Tunnel. Moreover, the improvements are aligned with Amtrak’s redevelopment plans for Penn Station, which necessitate alternative storage solutions for MARC trains currently housed at the station.
The $35 million project is set to begin later this fall, with an expected completion date in summer 2027. Funding for the improvements comes from a discretionary grant awarded by the Federal Railroad Administration's Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program.
