Maryland Driver Receives Refund After Vehicle Registration Fee Discrepancy

A Maryland resident recently discovered that her vehicle registration fee was significantly higher than expected, prompting her to investigate further. Meghan Parker noted that her fee had increased from $125.50 to $191.50, which she believed was due to an error in the weight classification of her vehicle.

Upon reviewing her previous registration documents, Parker found that the weight of her vehicle had been recorded differently on four occasions. This inconsistency led her to delve deeper into the matter. In Maryland, vehicle registration fees are determined by the manufacturer's shipping weight rather than the gross vehicle weight rating found on the vehicle's door sticker.

Parker initially sought clarification from her dealership and Subaru but received no immediate response. Consequently, she visited the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) with her documentation. An MVA employee confirmed that her vehicle belonged in the 3,500- to 3,700-pound weight class, but could not explain why it had been classified in the higher category.

MVA Administrator Chrissy Nizer explained that the agency uses various sources to determine vehicle weight, including the manufacturer's certificate of origin for new vehicles and title documents for used cars. The MVA had recently conducted a statewide update using VINtelligence data to ensure accurate vehicle weight classifications, which had resulted in some discrepancies.

Parker's vehicle, a used Subaru purchased in 2020 with a Kentucky title, had been incorrectly classified after the 2024 update. Once she raised the issue, the MVA corrected her classification and issued an $82 refund.

Parker is now encouraging other Maryland drivers to review their own registration records to ensure accuracy. She expressed concern about how many others might be affected by similar discrepancies.

The MVA acknowledges the financial burden of recent registration fee increases and has implemented measures to assist drivers, including the option to split one-year renewal fees into two payments. Drivers with questions regarding their vehicle's weight classification are advised to contact the MVA directly for assistance.
