Maryland Prepares for Severe Thunderstorms with High Winds and Tornado Potential

Maryland residents are bracing for potentially severe weather on Sunday afternoon, as forecasters indicate the possibility of thunderstorms that could deliver damaging wind gusts reaching 70 mph, large hail, and isolated tornadoes.

The National Weather Service issued a warning Sunday morning, highlighting risks of lightning, strong winds, and hail for the Mid-Atlantic region throughout the afternoon and evening.

Brendon Rubin-Oster from the National Weather Service noted that while the likelihood of tornadoes exists, it remains low. However, damaging winds pose a more significant threat, with the potential to uproot trees and down power lines.

Temperatures in Maryland are expected to soar to a high of 93 degrees, dropping to a low of 63 degrees in the evening.

Just two days prior, Anne Arundel County experienced severe weather that left tens of thousands without power, impacting Baltimore Gas and Electric customers. The storm resulted in a state park closing and traffic disruptions due to non-functioning traffic lights. By Saturday evening, over 3,000 customers in Anne Arundel County were still without electricity.

Lydia Parker, a spokesperson for Baltimore Gas and Electric, reported on Sunday morning that the number of affected customers has decreased to 300, with full restoration expected later in the day.

In Baltimore, the electric company’s outage map indicates hundreds of customers are currently experiencing power outages.
