The Maryland Department of Health (MDH) has announced two confirmed cases of measles in Southern Maryland, attributed to recent travel to a region experiencing an active outbreak.
Health officials have identified specific locations where individuals may have been exposed to the virus. These locations include:
- J&R Feeds LLC, 28038 Thompsons Corner Road, Mechanicsville, MD 20659, from July 16 to July 21, 2026.
- MedStar Health Urgent Care, 37767 Market Drive, Ste 100, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622, on July 20, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
- MedStar St. Marys Hospital Emergency Room, 25500 Point Lookout Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650, on July 21, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.
Individuals who were present at these locations during the specified times and are not fully vaccinated or immune to measles should monitor for symptoms for up to 21 days following potential exposure. Symptoms may include fever, cough, and a rash.
Those who develop symptoms are advised to avoid public spaces and contact their healthcare provider before visiting a medical facility to prevent further spread of the disease.
MDH emphasizes the importance of vaccination, noting that those who have received two doses of a measles-containing vaccine or were born before 1957 are generally considered protected. For those uncertain about their vaccination status, contacting a healthcare provider or accessing immunization records online is recommended.
Measles is highly contagious and can be transmitted through respiratory droplets, remaining airborne for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area.
To assist residents of St. Marys County, a call center has been established for inquiries regarding measles. Residents can reach the center Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 240-735-8288.
The St. Marys County Health Department is offering measles vaccinations to all community members, regardless of financial ability. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 301-475-4330. Additionally, vaccination clinics will be held at the following times:
- Margaret Brent Middle School-Based Health Center, 29675 Point Lookout Rd, Mechanicsville, MD 20659: July 23, 2026, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. and July 24, 2026, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
