The state of Maryland is experiencing a concerning rise in heat-related fatalities, with the number reaching 34 this summer. This figure is particularly alarming as it matches levels typically seen later in the year, with the state not reaching this total until October in previous years.
According to the Maryland Department of Health, July alone has accounted for 28 of these deaths, a significant increase from the 14 reported just last week. The spike in fatalities coincided with a series of extreme heat days during the Fourth of July weekend, where temperatures exceeded 100 degrees on both July 3 and July 4.
Adding to the hazardous conditions, the region faced a return of intense heat last week, which was further exacerbated by smoke from wildfires in Canada. This smoke has led to a decline in air quality across Maryland, compounding the health risks associated with high temperatures.
Historically, the state recorded 36 heat-related deaths in 2025, a figure that has not been surpassed since 46 fatalities occurred following a derecho in 2012.
