In a recent report by Newsweek and Statista, two hospitals in Massachusetts have been highlighted as among the best in the world. The rankings evaluated 2,530 hospitals across 32 countries, including 420 in the United States.
Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston was ranked No. 5 globally, surpassing notable institutions such as Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, which came in at No. 6. Other prominent hospitals that Massachusetts General outperformed include Charité-Universitätsmedizin in Berlin and Singapore General Hospital, ranked No. 8 and No. 10, respectively.
Brigham and Women's Hospital, also located in Boston, earned the No. 18 spot in the world rankings.
According to the report, hospitals were assessed based on four criteria: recommendations from medical experts, quality metrics, patient experience data, and results from Statista’s Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Implementation Survey.
Massachusetts General Hospital is known for its multidisciplinary care teams and innovations in various medical fields, including cancer treatment, heart disease, and transplantation. The hospital has made significant advancements, such as performing the largest number of adult transplants using Donation after Circulatory Death donor hearts in the U.S. in 2019.
Brigham and Women's Hospital has also established a reputation for handling complex cases, attracting patients from across the globe. Notably, it was the site of the first full face transplant in the United States back in 2011.
Other Massachusetts hospitals recognized in the report include Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at No. 112 and Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital at No. 250. Additional hospitals that made the list but did not rank in the top 250 include Tufts Medical Center, UMass Memorial Medical Center, and Boston Medical Center, among others.
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, was named the best hospital in the world in this year's rankings.
