Baltimore City Mayor Brandon Scott took to the paths of Druid Hill Park on Monday evening, engaging with residents about the city's preliminary budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
During the walk, the mayor addressed various community concerns and highlighted key initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety and investing in the future of Baltimore.
A significant aspect of the proposed budget is a $20 million investment in a new sports complex, which aims to foster recreational opportunities for the city's youth. Residents expressed enthusiasm for these developments, noting the importance of recreation for families and community cohesion.
“Recreation means the world to not only children but their families, adults, and elderly who are aging in place in our communities,” one resident remarked.
In addition to youth programs, community members emphasized the need to preserve the city's historical sites and ensure that older residents are considered in the budgetary allocations. One participant raised a pertinent question about creating a supportive environment for seniors, asking, “What are some of those things that help create community, just to continue a social support system for older adults?”
Mayor Scott responded by reinforcing that recreation facilities serve all age groups, stating, “People always think that our recreation centers are only for young people; they're for older adults too. This is why we open them early in the morning.”
Residents still have the opportunity to provide feedback on the budget during Taxpayer's Night, scheduled for Wednesday, April 22. A finalized budget is expected to be voted on by July 1.
