Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott is set to participate in the B&O Railroad Museum's Read Across America celebration, scheduled for March 1 and 2. This event will offer free admission for all children aged 12 and under.

The celebration will take place in the museum’s historic Roundhouse and will feature a lineup of notable Maryland figures, including Joy Moore, the mother of Governor Wes Moore, WJZ News anchor Janay Reece, and poet and artist Wordsmith, among others.

Read Across America, an initiative by the National Education Association, is the largest annual celebration of reading in the United States, coinciding with Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2. Established in 1998, the program aims to encourage a passion for reading among children through various engaging activities.

During the two-day event, which runs from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, families can enjoy half-hour story times featuring different guest readers every 30 minutes. This offers children the chance to hear stories from familiar faces.

In addition to story readings, attendees can look forward to themed swag giveaways and an interactive “book tasting” experience designed to ignite interest in reading.

On Monday, the museum will also host complimentary book giveaways while supplies last, offering titles such as “Pete the Cat’s Train Trip” and “Mel Fell.”

Kris Hoellen, the executive director of the B&O Railroad Museum, emphasized the importance of reading, stating, “Reading opens doors to imagination, opportunity, and lifelong learning.” She expressed pride in uniting local leaders to promote literacy and inspire young readers.

Admission to the museum ranges from $12 to $20, but children under 12 can enter for free. The B&O Railroad Museum is located at 901 W. Pratt Street in Baltimore and provides free on-site parking.
