On July 26, 2023, Mayor Brandon M. Scott revealed plans to nominate Chief James Wallace as the new Fire Chief for the Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD).

With over 33 years of service in the BCFD, Chief Wallace is recognized for his extensive experience and strong leadership skills. He has been at the forefront of the Office of Emergency Management since March 2020, initially serving as the Acting Director and later being appointed as the permanent director in October 2021.

Chief Wallace's career began as a paramedic, progressing through various roles including firefighter/paramedic, Fire Lieutenant, Battalion Chief for Special Operations Command, and Deputy Chief.

“Chief Wallace has dedicated his entire career to serving Baltimore City residents,” said Mayor Scott. “His leadership during the public health crisis has been invaluable, and I am confident that under his guidance, the Fire Department will continue to excel in its mission to serve the community.”

In response to his nomination, Chief Wallace expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “It is an absolute honor to serve as the Fire Chief for the Baltimore City Fire Department. I will work to uphold our esteemed reputation and excel in our mission of Pride Protecting People.”

Throughout his career, Chief Wallace has received accolades for his leadership and contributions, including recognition for life-saving actions performed during emergencies. He holds various certifications in emergency management and safety training from respected institutions such as the National Fire Academy and the Emergency Management Institute.

The nomination of Chief Wallace will be formally introduced at the Baltimore City Council's next regular meeting scheduled for August 21, 2023.
