BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. — Michael Maurice Johnson, a man previously charged and later cleared in the murder of 16-year-old Phylicia Barnes, has been sentenced to two consecutive life sentences plus 25 years for a separate incident involving the rape of a woman.
In April, Johnson was found guilty of first-degree rape and first-degree assault, though he was acquitted of attempted murder. The incident occurred in July 2024 after his girlfriend had asked him to leave her apartment due to his inappropriate texting behavior.
According to court documents, Johnson forcibly entered the victim's room and assaulted her over several hours, during which she struggled to escape his grasp. Body-camera footage from the police showed the victim in a severely distressed state, unable to verbally communicate and resorting to writing notes to convey her situation.
Johnson, now 42, has been incarcerated since the incident. His sentencing marks a significant development nearly a decade after he was exonerated in the high-profile case involving Barnes, whose disappearance garnered widespread media attention.
Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger expressed satisfaction with the sentence, emphasizing that it ensures Johnson will not pose a danger to women in the community again. He noted that the judge's intention was for Johnson to remain incarcerated for life.
Shellenberger also mentioned that members of Barnes' family attended the sentencing and expressed relief that Johnson would not have the opportunity to harm others.
As the judicial process unfolded, Shellenberger acknowledged the challenges faced by prosecutors in the earlier case, while also conveying hope that the Barnes family could find some comfort in the outcome of this recent trial.
