Missing Swimmer Found Dead in Potomac River

The search for a missing swimmer in the Potomac River concluded tragically on Tuesday afternoon when authorities recovered the body of Nazir Bell, a 20-year-old student from Towson University. Bell had been missing since Sunday night.

According to officials from Montgomery County, Bell was last seen around 6:15 p.m. on Sunday near the Billy Goat Trail A, located within the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park. He was swimming with a group along the Maryland side of the river, heading towards the Virginia shore near Great Falls.

Emergency responders from Montgomery and Fairfax counties, along with the U.S. Park Police, participated in a multi-agency search that lasted throughout Monday and into Tuesday. As the search unfolded, family members of Bell remained close by, hoping for positive news.

Peter Piringer, a spokesperson for the Montgomery County Fire Department, expressed condolences for the family during the operation, stating, “Our thoughts are with the family.”

Officials have not yet confirmed the identity of the swimmer, but family members informed local news organizations that the victim was Bell, who hailed from Germantown.

As of now, Towson University officials have not released a statement regarding the incident.
