An Abingdon woman is facing charges of child neglect after reportedly leaving her three young children unattended in a running car while she shopped at Walmart.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 15, in the parking lot of the Walmart located on Philadelphia Boulevard in Aberdeen. An off-duty police officer first noticed the children, aged 1, 2, and 4, sitting alone in the vehicle.
When on-duty officers arrived at the scene, they determined that the children had been left in the car for approximately 40 minutes. This was during a heatwave that saw temperatures soar into the high 90s.
Authorities were able to locate their mother, 32-year-old Marium Khan Ghauri, who stated that she left the children in the car while they were asleep. Following this revelation, Ghauri was arrested on charges of child neglect.
The children were safely returned to their father after the incident. Ghauri has since been released on her own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in court on September 2.
The Aberdeen Police Department issued a reminder to parents and caregivers about the dangers of leaving young children unattended in vehicles, emphasizing that even brief periods can pose significant risks and may lead to criminal charges.
