MTA Bus Crash in Pikesville Leaves 36 Injured

PIKESVILLE, Md. — A Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus collided with a FedEx Office building on Wednesday evening, injuring 36 individuals, according to the Baltimore County Police Department.

The incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. in the 1500 block of Reisterstown Road, where the bus struck several vehicles before crashing into the building.

In response to the crash, emergency services declared a mass casualty incident, deploying 15 ambulances, Medevac helicopters, and specialized teams from Shock Trauma and nearby counties. A total of 12 vehicles were involved in the accident, including one that rolled over.

The bus driver was critically injured and transported by medevac to a local hospital. Additionally, 35 other individuals were taken to various hospitals for treatment.

By 7:18 p.m., all patients had been transported to medical facilities. Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) crews were also on-site to manage downed power lines resulting from the crash.

Authorities have not yet clarified how many of the injured were passengers on the bus versus individuals in the other vehicles.

Road closures were implemented along MD 140 Reisterstown Road, both northbound and southbound, between Old Court Road and Sudbrook Lane as crews worked to clear the scene. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes due to the extended closures.

Local residents expressed shock at the severity of the incident. "I've been in this community for over 30 years, this is by far the worst I've ever seen," stated one resident. Another witness remarked on the unusual sight of such extensive vehicle damage in the area.

Governor Wes Moore acknowledged the incident on social media, expressing gratitude for the first responders and extending thoughts to those affected. Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier also released a statement, thanking emergency crews for their rapid response and care.
