The Maryland Department of Transportation's Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has officially launched its first bus maintenance apprenticeship program, collaborating with the Community College of Baltimore County. This initiative aims to enhance the skilled workforce in the region while providing accessible job opportunities.
Beginning in mid-October, the program will select ten candidates to participate in a comprehensive three-year training experience. Maryland Transit Administrator Holly Arnold emphasized the program's potential to create fulfilling careers in transit through a blend of practical training and classroom learning.
This full-time apprenticeship is developed in partnership with the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1300 and has received approval from the Maryland Department of Labor. Apprentices will start with a salary of $18.72 per hour, equating to an annual income of approximately $38,937.60.
The three-year curriculum is structured to provide a robust educational experience, with the inaugural class expected to graduate in 2027. In the first year, apprentices will engage in both classroom instruction and hands-on training covering essential skills such as truck orientation, shop safety, tools and equipment handling, brakes, steering and suspension, engine mechanics, and preventive maintenance.
ATU President Mike McMillan expressed pride in the collaboration with the MTA and the Community College of Baltimore County, highlighting the importance of investing in worker training and education for long-term community benefits.
