MTA to Upgrade Fare Collection System with New Charm Pass App

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is preparing to enhance the fare collection process on its 825 buses by introducing new fareboxes this summer. This upgrade aims to provide a more efficient and user-friendly experience for riders.

The transition will occur gradually, with the MTA planning to upgrade approximately 200 buses each month. The complete overhaul of the fare collection system is expected to be finalized by the end of the year.

As part of this upgrade, the current CharmCard 'tap and go' payment method will be phased out. Riders are encouraged to switch to the CharmPass mobile app, which has been a popular choice among commuters for its convenience and security.

According to Holly Arnold, the Maryland Transit Administrator, these new fareboxes will significantly enhance the rider experience. The new equipment features larger, more readable color displays and fewer moving parts, which will increase durability and reduce maintenance needs. The existing fare collection technology is over two decades old and often prone to difficulties in repairs.

With the CharmPass app, users can purchase fares for any MTA service directly from their smartphones. A one-way fare purchased through the app is valid for 90 minutes, allowing for free transfers among the MTA's core services, including local buses, Metro Subway, and Light Rail.

The app also offers discounted options for CharmFlex 3-day and 10-day passes. Riders without smartphones can still pay their fares at the new fareboxes upon boarding or can buy passes at Ticket Vending Machines and the Transit Store.

The MTA advises riders to utilize any remaining balance on their CharmCards before the transition. From August 11 to November 30, CharmCards will not be accepted on buses equipped with the new fareboxes, and the full retirement of the CharmCard will take effect on December 31, 2025.

For more information on the transition or to set up a new CharmPass account, riders can reach out to the Transit Information Contact Center.
