Nara Organics Recalls Baby Formula Amid Botulism Concerns

Nara Organics has announced a recall of its Whole Milk Organic Powdered Infant Formula, which is sold at Target stores and online, following a multistate outbreak of infant botulism.

Federal authorities reported that three infants, aged between 2 and 5 months, fell ill in California, Pennsylvania, and Washington after consuming the formula. These infants required hospitalization and were treated with an FDA-approved medication for botulism.

Infant botulism is a rare but serious condition affecting babies under one year old, arising from the consumption of bacteria spores that produce toxins in their immature gut microbiomes. Symptoms can include constipation, poor feeding, drooping eyelids, weak muscle tone, and respiratory difficulties.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has urged consumers who possess the recalled formula to discontinue its use immediately. The formula, which constitutes less than 1% of the U.S. infant formula market, is manufactured in Europe but is exclusively sold in the United States.

Parents and caregivers are advised to photograph the lot number and use-by date of any opened cans and monitor their infants for any symptoms. The CDC recommends labeling the formula as 'DO NOT USE' and storing it safely away from other baby items for at least one month. If no symptoms arise during that period, the leftover formula should be discarded.
