In Middle River, Maryland, a group of quick-thinking neighbors sprang into action early Tuesday morning, rescuing a mother and her two children from a townhouse engulfed in flames. The incident occurred around 7:12 a.m. on January 6, in the 400 block of Kosoak Road.
Firefighters from Baltimore County arrived on the scene to find a two-story townhouse ablaze, with residents already attempting to help the family escape. Footage from a Ring doorbell camera showed several neighbors rushing to the scene before the fire department arrived.
One neighbor was seen catching two children as they were lowered from a second-story window. Others sought out ladders and flagged down passing vehicles to assist in the rescue effort.
Emergency responders treated the mother and her children for minor injuries, and they were subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. Tragically, a dog that was inside the home did not survive the fire.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Baltimore County Fire Chief Joseph Dixon commended the neighbors for their swift actions in what could have been a far more tragic situation.
Fire officials are urging residents to ensure that working smoke alarms are installed in their homes. More information on fire safety and eligibility for free smoke alarms can be obtained through the Baltimore County Fire Department’s Community Risk Reduction program.
