The Trump administration is set to establish a 528-bed facility in Alexandria, Louisiana, designed to expedite the deportation of migrant families and unaccompanied children. This facility will be located adjacent to the Alexandria International Airport, which serves as a major hub for immigration enforcement flights.
Officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have labeled the new site a "staging area" rather than a detention center, asserting that families and children would only remain there for a short duration—up to 72 hours—while awaiting deportation. However, immigration advocates have expressed concern that this could lead to longer detentions, similar to those reported at other ICE facilities.
Last year, a chaotic deportation incident involving Guatemalan children highlighted the logistical difficulties faced by authorities, as children were abruptly transported to distant locations without adequate preparation. The Alexandria facility aims to alleviate such challenges by providing a centralized location for processing families and children.
The facility will be operated by a nonprofit arm of LaSalle Corrections, a private prison contractor, which has been awarded the contract to manage the site. Unlike unaccompanied minors, who are typically placed in state-licensed shelters, the new facility will not involve the Office of Refugee Resettlement, raising further concerns among advocates about oversight and the treatment of children.
In public discussions, officials have described the facility as a "humanitarian effort" for families choosing to return home voluntarily. However, critics argue that the term "self-deporting" may overlook the pressures that families face in making such decisions. ICE has mandated that families at the facility not be referred to as prisoners and has instructed against the use of bars or cages during transport.
While the facility is expected to begin operations as early as August, it has faced scrutiny due to the history of LaSalle Corrections, which has previously been cited for violations related to health and safety standards at its other facilities.
