A police-involved shooting at a bus stop in Gaithersburg resulted in the death of a 46-year-old man on Sunday evening, according to the Maryland Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division.
The deceased, identified as Elliott Powers from Rockville, was approached by officers responding to reports of an armed individual at the bus stop located in front of Montgomery Village Plaza on Lost Knife Road around 6:45 p.m. on Sunday.
Preliminary investigations indicate that officers from both Montgomery County and Gaithersburg noticed Powers with what appeared to be a handgun. Officers engaged him in conversation for several minutes before discharging their weapons, striking him.
Despite immediate medical assistance provided by the officers, Powers was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was subsequently found near his location.
Montgomery County Police Captain Cody Fields stated during a news conference that the suspect's actions compelled the officers to use their service weapons, although the specific actions taken by Powers remain unclear.
The officers involved from Montgomery County have been identified as Officer Michael Wengloski, Officer Andrew Hanko, and Officer Robert Bullock. From the Gaithersburg Police Department, the officers involved include Officer Noah Whelan, Officer Carissa Fortin, and Sergeant Christopher Leach.
The Maryland Office of the Attorney General noted that the release of the preliminary investigation was initially delayed to allow for a thorough review of the information. Body camera footage from the officers will be analyzed and is expected to be made public within 20 days, barring any further delays.
This incident marks the second police shooting in the vicinity of Montgomery Village Plaza this year; in March, an officer shot and wounded a 27-year-old man who allegedly fired at an officer during a pursuit.
