The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) has established a new unit focused on enhancing safety in the city’s primary entertainment districts, including Downtown Baltimore, the Inner Harbor, Federal Hill, Harbor Point, and Fells Point.
With plans to extend its reach to Canton Square, Horseshoe Casino, Camden Yards, and M&T Bank Stadium, the Entertainment District Unit aims to foster a secure and inviting environment for residents and visitors alike.
According to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, the initiative is not solely about enforcement but also about creating welcoming spaces for all who enjoy Baltimore’s attractions. He emphasized the importance of proactive policing and collaboration to mitigate crime and improve quality-of-life issues while strengthening ties with the community.
The newly formed unit will operate during both day and evening shifts, focusing on proactive measures such as parking and traffic enforcement, addressing illegal dirt bike activity, seizing illegal firearms, conducting business checks, issuing citations for open container violations, and engaging with community members to tackle nuisance concerns. This unit is intended to complement existing patrol operations.
Since its inception on August 10, the unit has conducted over 1,110 business checks and 1,160 foot patrols. Their efforts have resulted in 72 traffic and parking citations, six open container citations, the seizure of three handguns, and seven arrests, according to BPD reports.
