Parents Charged in Death of Overweight Michigan Boy

The parents of a 7-year-old boy from Flint, Michigan, have been charged with serious crimes following the child's death last November. Casper O'Brien, who weighed 255 pounds, was found unresponsive at home, prompting a call to emergency services.

Damien O'Brien, 40, and Jessica O'Brien, 41, have been charged with second-degree murder, torture, and three counts of second-degree child abuse. Both parents were arraigned last week and are currently held without bond in Genesee County Jail, with a probable cause hearing scheduled for Thursday.

According to Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, the parents failed to provide their son with proper nutrition, leading to his obesity and related health issues. The medical examiner's report indicated that Casper was classified as obese, measuring 4 feet, 2.5 inches tall, and his death was attributed to dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition exacerbated by his weight.

Reports indicate that Casper had not received necessary medical treatment despite the family's access to healthcare. He was last seen by a primary care provider in February 2024, where he was diagnosed with a cough, congestion, and metabolic disease, but was never referred to a specialist.

Investigators noted that the home was in poor condition, with piles of trash present and signs of neglect, including severe bed sores on Casper. The couple's 5-year-old daughter has since been placed in foster care due to concerns for her well-being.

Damien O'Brien's attorney stated that he would not comment on the case specifics, emphasizing the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. Jessica O'Brien's legal representation did not respond to requests for comment.

Prosecutor Leyton expressed his dismay at the circumstances surrounding Casper's death, describing the situation as one of the most tragic he has encountered in his 22 years of service.
