Pedestrian Fatalities Continue on Liberty Road

RANDALLSTOWN, Md. — Liberty Road, known for its history of pedestrian accidents, witnessed another tragedy early Tuesday morning when John Bates, Sr., 60, was fatally struck by a vehicle.

The incident occurred just before 5 a.m. at the intersection of Liberty Road and Old Court Road. Police reported that Bates was attempting to cross the road when he was hit by a 2025 Hyundai Elantra.

Initially, the driver left the scene but returned shortly after the collision. The circumstances surrounding the crash, including who had the traffic light and whether Bates was in a crosswalk, remain under investigation.

Residents of the area have expressed ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety on Liberty Road. Joyce Daniel, a local resident, described the road as dangerous due to heavy traffic and speeding vehicles. “There’s so much traffic going and coming, and people are speeding down here,” she stated. “They don’t stop. It’s a bad street.”

Catherine Ware, another nearby resident, echoed these sentiments, noting that she often worries about pedestrians crossing the busy road. “Seeing people crossing on foot, I definitely look at them every night like, ‘That’s really dangerous,’” she said.

This incident is not isolated; earlier this year, another pedestrian, 67-year-old Loretta Pretlow, was killed while crossing Liberty Road at Milford Mill Road on Valentine’s Day.

Despite the presence of special signage and flashing lights aimed at improving safety, residents believe more needs to be done to protect pedestrians in the area.
