BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. — Baltimore County police are currently investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred early Tuesday morning.

At approximately 4:45 a.m., officers responded to reports of a crash involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Liberty and Old Court roads.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered the victim, identified as 60-year-old John Bates Sr., suffering from severe injuries. He was subsequently airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators have determined that Bates was attempting to cross Liberty Road when he was struck by a 2025 Hyundai Elantra traveling eastbound. Following the incident, the driver initially left the scene but returned shortly thereafter.

The circumstances leading up to the collision are still under investigation as police continue to gather evidence.
