Days after the completion of a substantial renovation, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is exhibiting signs of deterioration, with blue material peeling from its bottom. This renovation, which was part of a project initiated by former President Donald Trump, carried an estimated cost of $14.7 million.
On Thursday, observers noted a section of the pool where a flap of the blue coating was partially detached and floating. It remains uncertain whether this material is paint or a sealant, and the cause of the peeling is still under investigation.
Eddie Wood, the owner of Atlantic Industrial Coatings, the company responsible for the renovation, remarked that the images provided do not offer sufficient detail to determine the exact nature of the issue. He assured that any problems identified during upcoming maintenance would be addressed.
Tim Auerhahn, an expert in pool infrastructure, indicated that the videos do not clearly show the cause of the apparent delamination. He explained that a coating system may fail due to various factors, including surface preparation and environmental conditions. Auerhahn emphasized the importance of assessing whether the peeling is localized or indicative of a broader issue with the coating.
This incident adds to the ongoing challenges faced by the Reflecting Pool, which has been a focal point of the National Mall for decades. Previous renovations, including a $34 million effort during President Barack Obama’s administration, attempted to tackle persistent problems such as algae growth and leaks.
Despite the recent renovations, algae has already begun to reappear in the pool. Workers have been seen treating the water with hydrogen peroxide and utilizing advanced technology to combat the discoloration, yet large sections of the pool remain visibly green.
The Reflecting Pool renovation is among several projects aimed at enhancing the aesthetics of Washington, D.C., initiated by the former president.
