A naked man briefly took the place of the Christopher Columbus statue at the Inner Harbor on Saturday morning, performing as a live statue for nearly three hours.
The performer, who posed as Michelangelo's statue of David, attracted attention as he stood atop the empty pedestal, surrounded by art supplies for onlookers to use for sketching him.
Witnesses reported that firefighters utilized a cherry picker to remove him from the pedestal, likening the scene to a claw machine operation. The man reportedly resisted attempts by police to assist him in getting dressed.
Onlookers encouraged officers during the removal, shouting instructions like, “get his legs, that’s right, get him by the arms.” Eventually, police carried him to a police van.
Michelle Lach, a local resident, identified the performer as “Ham,” noting his previous work in cities like Philadelphia and New York. She described his performances as evolving from clothed acts to his current full nudity.
Lach mentioned that he was holding an umbrella in hopes of performing for 24 hours, seeking shade throughout the day. She expressed admiration for the artistry of his pose.
However, the police intervention concluded his Fourth of July performance shortly after it began around 9:30 a.m.
