A bus accident in Pikesville, a suburb of Baltimore, resulted in injuries to at least 28 individuals on Wednesday night, July 8. The Baltimore County Fire Department has classified the incident as a mass casualty event.
The collision involved a Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus, which struck several vehicles before crashing into a nearby building at 500 West Franklin Street. According to Jerimiah Moerke, a spokesperson for the MTA, the bus initially collided with a Lexus and subsequently a Nissan.
One individual is reported to be in critical condition, while emergency responders worked diligently to rescue the bus driver from the vehicle lodged against the building. All injured parties were transported to local hospitals for medical care.
Kevin Cartwright, communications director for the Baltimore City Fire Department, noted that the scale of the incident warranted a level one mass casualty response due to the significant number of patients involved.
The Baltimore City Fire Department's special rescue operations team assessed the structural integrity of the four-story apartment building impacted by the crash. Fortunately, they found that the building's support beams remained intact, though the first floor has been temporarily condemned.
Authorities are advising motorists to avoid the area as emergency crews continue their operations. The investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing, with MTA Police, the Baltimore City Fire Department, and building inspectors present at the scene.
