Police Fatally Shoot Driver Following Pursuit in Stolen Vehicle

A man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was shot and killed by Baltimore police early Sunday morning after leading officers on a 20-minute car chase through the city.

The incident began at approximately 1:25 a.m. when the Baltimore Police Department's Foxtrot helicopter identified a vehicle believed to be connected to an armed carjacking that had occurred in Baltimore County.

Ground officers located the vehicle and initiated a pursuit while the helicopter monitored from above. The chase lasted around 20 minutes, concluding when the driver stopped on the 3300 block of Clifton Avenue in the Walbrook neighborhood at roughly 1:41 a.m.

Officers positioned their vehicles to block the suspect's car. As the driver attempted to exit the vehicle, he quickly retreated back inside upon seeing the police. Officers then approached the car and attempted to persuade him to exit, but he refused and locked himself inside.

During this time, as an officer prepared to break a window, another officer spotted a firearm inside the vehicle and alerted the others. Shortly thereafter, multiple officers discharged their weapons, striking the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The exact number of shots fired remains unknown.

Following the incident, police recovered the weapon, which was identified as a BB gun, a detail that Police Chief Richard Worley emphasized, noting its resemblance to a real firearm.

No officers were injured in the encounter. Those involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigation Division, which is expected to take between two to six months.
