Baltimore Police were called to the scene of a juvenile fight at Broadway Market in Fells Point over the weekend, as captured by nearby surveillance cameras.
Following the altercation, a 17-year-old girl was arrested after allegedly spitting in the face of an officer when asked to vacate the area. The police department has not yet disclosed the specific charges she is facing.
Local business owner Beth Hawks expressed her concerns about juvenile behavior in the area, stating, "I know if I spit in a cop's face, I wouldn't want to go home. I'd be begging to go to juvenile or to the central booking because what would happen at home would be far worse than what would happen in central booking." She echoed sentiments from City State's Attorney Ivan Bates about holding parents or guardians accountable for their children's actions.
This incident is part of a troubling trend in the historic district, where just last month, gunfire caused chaos near Broadway Market, leading to the arrest of a 16-year-old for possessing a handgun. Additionally, an adult was shot in a separate incident over the same weekend.
The uptick in violence and the presence of juveniles beyond curfew hours have raised significant concerns within the community, prompting city officials to extend curfew hours for events like Sail250 and Fourth of July celebrations in Fells Point. The Department of Recreation and Parks has also increased staff presence in high-traffic areas and implemented ID checks.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley addressed the situation, stating, "We won't continue to see this behavior. We're working with the community to come up with an alternative plan." The police department has been approached for further details regarding the number of arrests made and the nature of charges, but a response is still pending.
