BALTIMORE — A police-involved shooting occurred on Monday morning in Bolton Hill after officers confronted a man armed with a knife. The incident took place around 10:30 a.m. at a high-rise apartment building located at the intersection of Park Avenue and Howard Street.
According to Police Commissioner Richard Worley, the 48-year-old suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his lower body and was subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Police responded to the scene following multiple reports of disorderly conduct and were asked to perform a welfare check on a resident. Upon arriving on an upper floor, officers found blood in the hallway, which raised concerns about the situation.
When officers knocked on the door of the apartment, the suspect opened it while brandishing a large knife. Despite attempts to persuade him to drop the weapon, he reportedly advanced toward the officers. In response, officers deployed tasers, but when those measures failed, one officer discharged his firearm. The entire encounter lasted approximately 10 minutes.
Prior to the police's arrival, a fire alarm had been activated, leading to the evacuation of several residents from the building. During the standoff, a nearby resident attempted to exit their apartment but was advised by officers to stay inside for safety.
Commissioner Worley indicated that the incident was related to mental health concerns. The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3, representing city officers, was present at the scene as well.
