This initiative aims to combat illegal activities and address concerns over recent incidents involving large crowds and violence.
The decision to maintain these measures comes after a series of troubling events in June, where gatherings in Fells Point escalated into violence, culminating in gunfire on two separate weekends.
Some visitors to the area have expressed that the heightened police presence and traffic restrictions contribute to a greater sense of safety. One visitor, Jim Berry from Pittsburgh, remarked that the measures make him feel more secure while enjoying the neighborhood with his wife.
Local businesses, however, have voiced their frustration regarding the impact of open drinking, illegal alcohol sales, and the road closures on their operations. Ron Rurman, owner of Max's Taphouse, stated that the ongoing crime and roadblocks have resulted in significant financial losses for his establishment.
Conversely, some residents welcome the road closures as a necessary step towards restoring order. Baltimore resident Robert Blanding noted that such measures are essential for creating structure in the community, reflecting on the changes he has seen over the years.
Yet, not everyone is convinced that the roadblocks will effectively address the root causes of the issues facing Fells Point. Resident Kolby Hawkins highlighted the need for solutions that tackle the underlying problems rather than just the symptoms.
