Baltimore police officers shot a 35-year-old man on Thursday afternoon in the Upton neighborhood after a struggle ensued during their attempt to apprehend him. The incident occurred around 12:13 p.m. at the intersection of Wilson Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, where officers responded to reports of a disturbance involving multiple individuals.
According to Police Commissioner Richard Worley, officers were alerted that one of the individuals involved in the altercation was armed with a knife. When police attempted to stop the man, he fled on foot, prompting officers to pursue him.
During the chase, one officer engaged in a physical struggle with the man over a satchel he was carrying. Another officer deployed a Taser in an effort to subdue him, but it proved ineffective. After the man gained control of the Taser, one officer retreated and fired a single shot at him.
The suspect was reported to be in critical but stable condition following the shooting. Officials revealed that the satchel contained both a handgun and a knife, and noted that the man was previously known to law enforcement, having had two handguns confiscated by police last year.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a section of Pennsylvania Avenue was closed off, resulting in a significant police presence and the deployment of crime scene tape. Witnesses reported seeing the confrontation and expressed concerns about safety in the area.
Mayor Brandon Scott responded to the incident by directing his Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement to implement a coordinated response in the Upton area. He acknowledged the traumatic impact such incidents have on the community and expressed sympathy for those affected.
CityLink Lime services were temporarily rerouted due to the police activity, and local businesses, including Mary’s Kitchen, were forced to close for the day, resulting in financial losses for owners.
The Baltimore Police Department has been involved in five shootings this year, three of which were fatal. This incident adds to the ongoing concerns regarding police use of force in the city.
