Prince George’s Sheriff Reveals Serious Injuries from Motorcycle Incident

In late May, Prince George’s County Sheriff John Carr was involved in a motorcycle accident while test riding a vehicle from a local Harley Davidson dealership. The incident, initially described as minor by his chief of staff, resulted in Carr sustaining serious injuries, including three broken wrist bones and torn ligaments.

Following the accident, which occurred when Carr lost control of the motorcycle and hit a curb, he underwent emergency surgery at a Baltimore hospital. His chief of staff, Tracy Brown, initially stated that Carr was involved in a minor incident and did not require treatment at Shock Trauma.

However, as weeks passed without sight of Carr at the sheriff’s office, speculation about his condition grew. On June 17, the sheriff's office shared a message from Carr on social media, assuring the public that operations continued without interruption.

In a recent interview, Carr, now in a cast, elaborated on the accident and his recovery process, noting that his family advised him to take time off to heal. He emphasized the importance of community engagement in his role as sheriff, stating, "You can’t just serve orders and lock people up and think you can be part of the community."

As he prepares for the upcoming primary election, Carr faces challenges, including a significant backlog of evictions that his office must address. He highlighted the agency's staffing issues and the need for more resources to effectively serve the county's population of one million.

Currently, the sheriff’s office employs 393 full-time staff members, a number Carr believes is insufficient to meet the demands of the community.
