Last July, Cambridge resident Vernon Spear experienced a life-threatening infection after scratching his arm on a crab pot while fishing in the Choptank River. After treating his minor cuts with hydrogen peroxide, Spear developed a high fever and alarming symptoms that led his family to rush him to the emergency room. There, doctors diagnosed him with a Vibrio vulnificus infection, which can be fatal without prompt treatment.
Spear was airlifted to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he received critical care. Fortunately, he survived and retained his arm, but his recovery has involved extensive treatments, including skin grafts.
Cases like Spear's are becoming more frequent, a trend attributed to climate change and rising water temperatures in the Chesapeake Bay. Researchers note that Vibrio bacteria thrive in warm, brackish waters, making the bay a suitable habitat as temperatures increase.
Vibrio species, including V. vulnificus, are naturally occurring bacteria found in coastal waters. While many types are harmless, some can cause severe illness when ingested or through open wounds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 80,000 Vibrio infections occur each year in the U.S., predominantly from consuming raw shellfish.
In Maryland, the number of reported Vibrio infections has more than doubled in recent years, rising from 100 cases in 2018 to 260 in 2025. Virginia has seen similar increases, with reported infections nearly doubling in the same timeframe.
Experts attribute the rise in infections to both improved testing methods and environmental changes. Dr. Clifford Mitchell, director of the environmental health bureau at the Maryland Department of Health, emphasized that warmer waters lead to an increase in Vibrio cases, with the prime season for infections extending beyond the traditional summer months.
With the Chesapeake Bay's average water temperature rising by 1.8 degrees over the past three decades, conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for Vibrio bacteria. The bacteria flourish in waters above 64 degrees and with specific salinity levels, which are met in many areas of the bay.
Infections from V. vulnificus can escalate rapidly, leading to severe complications like sepsis. Last year, Maryland reported 14 confirmed cases of V. vulnificus, with three resulting in death. Virginia reported 11 cases, including one fatality.
As public health experts continue to monitor Vibrio levels, they have developed forecasting models to help predict when and where infections may rise. These tools aim to provide valuable information to oyster farmers and recreational water users alike.
To reduce the risk of infection, health officials recommend cooking seafood thoroughly and avoiding exposure to open wounds in warm coastal waters. After his experience, Spear has decided to forgo eating raw oysters, reflecting the caution that many residents may now adopt as Vibrio cases rise in the region.
