A Baltimore County man has been convicted of second-degree murder following a tragic shooting incident on Christmas Eve 2024 that resulted in the death of his 4-year-old son, Jacobi, and injuries to his 1-year-old daughter, Peyton, and the children's mother, Promyss Marcelle.

Mark Jones Jr., 31, from Rosedale, faced a five-day trial at the Baltimore County Circuit Court on multiple charges, including first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. Prosecutors argued that Jones shot his son and wounded the others inside their residence at the Ross Ridge Apartment Homes on Breslin Court.

During the trial, Assistant State’s Attorney Madison Frank emphasized the gravity of Jones's actions, stating, “Every pull of that trigger is a choice.” She detailed the tumultuous relationship between Jones and Marcelle, indicating that Marcelle had requested Jones to leave their apartment that morning to allow for a peaceful Christmas celebration. However, he refused to comply.

According to Frank, tensions escalated when Marcelle texted Jones about her intentions to pursue child support, which allegedly prompted the shooting. In contrast, Assistant Public Defender Erin Cullinan contended that police quickly concluded her client was the shooter, asserting that Jones claimed the couple struggled over the firearm.

Marcelle's testimony was characterized by Cullinan as inconsistent, suggesting that she might have had ulterior motives for wanting Jones to leave the apartment.

In memory of Jacobi, a memorial service was held at March Life Tribute Center in Randallstown, where attendees remembered his joyful spirit and love for dinosaurs. Additionally, TurnAround Inc. has named its crisis center in Dundalk the “Jacobi Center” to honor the young boy.

The Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office has announced plans to seek a life sentence without the possibility of parole for Jones, who has been held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center since his arrest.
