Sarah David Leads Fundraising in Baltimore County State's Attorney Race

In the race for Baltimore County State's Attorney, Sarah David has emerged as a frontrunner in fundraising, significantly surpassing both incumbent Scott Shellenberger and fellow Democratic challenger Lauren Lipscomb.

Currently serving as Maryland's deputy state prosecutor, David's financial backing has been bolstered by contributions from several prominent local attorneys and law firms. Her campaign finance reports reveal support from influential figures, including the CEO of Miles & Stockbridge and a former Baltimore City state’s attorney.

David expressed pride in the backing she has received from the legal community, stating, "I think it’s a testament to the fact that over my career and as a part of the community, I have worked with so many of these incredible lawyers who do this important work, and they trust my ability to lead because they’ve seen it."

From January 9, 2025, to January 14, 2026, David raised over $202,000, a figure that is more than five times that of Shellenberger and over 14 times Lipscomb's total. By the end of this period, she had $234,659 on hand, compared to Shellenberger's $55,195 and Lipscomb's $4,148, providing her with a significant advantage as the primary approaches.

The primary election is set for June 23, with early voting occurring from June 11 to 18. David aims to modernize the office's approach, emphasizing the use of technology and improved communication with the public, while addressing the need for stronger leadership.

In contrast, Shellenberger, who has held the position for nearly two decades, argues that his administration has effectively managed a decline in violent crime, asserting his capability to continue leading the office professionally.

While Shellenberger has garnered some support from the legal community, many former supporters are now backing David. Notable contributors include Michael Smith, who emphasized the need for renewed leadership, and Brian Thompson, who acknowledged the challenges faced by the office in retaining experienced prosecutors.

As the election date approaches, the dynamics of the campaign continue to evolve, highlighting the contrasting visions for the future of Baltimore County's State's Attorney's Office.
